CAREER BIOGRAPHY
Rebecca Riggs-Bennett (b. 1997) is a composer, music producer, sound designer, sound artist, spoken word artist, creative producer and curator based on Whadjuk Noongar boodjar in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia). She works with sound as an immersive medium: one that transmits meaning, transports listeners, and transforms environments in real time. Her work encompasses interdisciplinary, collaborative, context-responsive and socially-engaged creative processes, and her practice entangles electronic music production with sound design for theatrical contexts, incorporating location recording, vocal recording and manipulation, sampling and DIY foley.  Rebecca’s cross-form experience on over 50 projects in her 10-year career has enforced a practice versatility and ability to produce high-quality outcomes on varying concepts. Across all aspects of her work, Rebecca intends to meaningfully connect and immerse people in space, place, people, concepts, and created worlds, resulting in intimate and considered sonic experiences for listeners.

Rebecca graduated from sound production studies, majoring in electronic music production, at SAE Institute in 2016. She began engaging on arts projects in the independent performing arts sector, receiving direct mentorship from composers, music producers, sound artists and sound designers Rachael Dease, Anna Laverty, Thembi Soddell, Rachel Claudio, Dr. Claire “Furchick” Panell and Kingsley Reeve. Later, Rebecca critically developed her interdisciplinary approach to music and sound through a Bachelor of Performing Arts from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, majoring in practice transition and graduating in 2022.

Her work in original composition and sound design has contributed extensively to presentations with recognised festivals, arts organisations and cultural institutions including Perth Festival, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Black Swan State Theatre Company, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, Barking Gecko Arts, 10 Nights in Port Festival, IN SITU: Tura New Music and STRUT Dance, Cool Change Contemporary, The Blue Room Theatre, DADAA Fremantle, CircusWA, WA Youth Theatre Company, Riptide Youth Theatre Company, All About Women Festival: Sydney Opera House (NSW), Performance Space (NSW), Now or Never Festival (VIC), Bunjil Place (VIC), SIGNAL (VIC), Vitalstatistix (SA) and MOD. Museum (SA), and Glastonbury Festival (UK). She collaborated with Big hART to create the score for short film ‘Jaarda Jarda Bura, Gurri Bura | Jarda Ngarli, Gurri Ngarli’, commissioned by the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip, which continues to screen at festivals nationally and internationally including: Flickerfest, First Nations Film Festival, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney Opera House, Down Under Film Festival (Copenhagen and Berlin).

As a lead artist and collaborator in sound and music, Rebecca creates original performance and installation works, and presents these as participatory and immersive experiences for audiences. Her original work includes 'So once you were here you had you', a site-specific work using wearable speakers (commissioned and presented by Fremantle Biennale), 'Undergrowth', a binaural headphone work (commissioned by SIGNAL), Our Sandman, a live performance for small groups on individual beds (presented by Cool Change Contemporary), 'The Table', an interactive installation triggered by a pool game (presented by DADAA Fremantle) and 'my sandman', a one-on-one performance for closed eyes (presented by Crack Theatre Festival).

Under her music artist alias Elsewhere/Rebecca, she independently released the 10-track debut album With Me, We Walk, and launched the project digitally as an interactive headphone experience. The original ambient electronica and spoken word project also released three accompanying short films, with reviews and features describing the work as ‘an aural experience that ebbs and flows between luscious and calm sonic worlds to lose one’s self in’. As a result, Elsewhere/Rebecca was nominated Best Electronic Producer by the West Australian Music (WAM) Awards 2021. Elsewhere/Rebecca performed live sets at The Courtyard Club, PICA’s Salon Vernissage, Tura Soup Nights, Kickstart Festival, Hyperfest and WAMFest.

Rebecca has also steered and been part of socially-engaged and community-responsive development processes to realise new sound and music work. She has spent time with English conversation groups for the soundscape and music piece ‘Seasons Greetings’, commissioned by Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. She travelled to Geraldton and Carnarvon with Riptide Youth Theatre Company and Artistic Director Katt Osbourne to record local young people and produce music and sound design for two site-specific audio walking tours as part of the project ‘Walk With Me’. For ‘Habitats & Homes’, presented as part of 10 Nights in Port Festival, she coordinated a 10-week workshop series in 3 different Perth schools consisting of storytelling, music-making, sound design and audio recording to produce a 20-minute spoken storytelling, sound and music work. Students commented “I never would have thought that I would be making music in art”, “I got to express myself through song” and “Rebecca taught me that you can have fun listening to noise”.

Her career has been supported by significant residencies and artist laboratories such as Perth Festival Lab, Time Place Space Nomad with Arts House, INCOMING with Fremantle Biennale, Women of Music Production Writer’s Camp, Kolyang with Performing Lines, and Momentum with pvi collective. She has been the recipient of competitive grants by the Western Australian Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport and Healthway. In 2026 she was granted the award for ‘Outstanding Sound Design’ at the Performing Arts WA Awards for her work on ‘The Seven Stages of Grieving’. In 2025 she was granted the same award for the independently produced, site-responsive roaming headphone project UP THERE, created in collaboration with Up There Collective. The collective was also awarded ‘Outstanding Design’ in the same year by The Blue Room Theatre Awards.

Rebecca is also a curator SPACED for the 2026-27 program Know Thy Neighbour #4: Gestures, tending to eight multidisciplinary, socially-engaged artist residency projects around Booloo/Perth, and is currently planning toward a presentation in 2027.
